No-Scalpel Vasectomy
Description of procedure:
The preparation of the skin and draping of the operative area is the same as in the usual vasectomy procedure. The surgeon locates the vas by feeling it between his thumb and two fingers. He then injects local anesthetic in the skin of the scrotum and along the vas. The needle prick is the only pain the subject feels in the whole procedure. The vas is grasped with a special clamp. The skin over the vas is punctured with a special fine-pointed hemostat. The vas is exposed and picked up with the pointed hemostat and brought out of the punctured hole in the scrotal skin. The rest of the procedure of the vasectomy is similar to the regular vasectomy. The puncture hole is too small to need any suture to close it.
After vasectomy, the skin around the puncture hole shrinks, and the hole closes itself. No-scalpel vasectomy can be performed in much less time than the conventional incision technique.
